Andrés Bonifacio

Today the Philippines celebrate Bonifacio Day.

Andrés Bonifacio y de Castro (November 30, 1863 – May 10, 1897) was a Filipino nationalist and revolutionary. He was a founder of, and later the supreme leader of, the Katipunan movement which sought the independence of the Philippines from Spanish colonial rule and started the Philippine Revolution. He is considered a de facto national hero of the Philippines. Bonifacio is also considered by some Filipino historians to be the first president of the Philippines, but he is not officially recognized as such.

The Katipunan was a Philippine revolutionary society founded by anti-Spanish Filipinos in Manila in 1892, whose primary aim was to gain independence from Spain through revolution.

The word “katipunan”, literally meaning ‘association’, comes from the root word “tipon”, a Tagalog word, meaning “society” or “gather together”. Its official revolutionary name is: Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng~ mg~á Anak ng~ Bayan (English: Highest and Most Honorable Society of the Children of the Nation). The Katipunan is also known by its acronym, K.K.K..
